Matt Longjohn, a doctor and nationally recognized public health leader, officially filed his candidacy for the Democratic primary in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District.
He submitted the most nominating petition signatures filed by any candidate.

Portage, MI – Dr. Matt Longjohn, a physician and the former National Health Officer for the YMCA, announced his campaign has filed 1700 petition signatures to put him on the August primary ballot.

“I am grateful for all the help this campaign received to allow us to be turning in 1700 signatures today. Voters from Saugatuck to Sturgis, and from Richland to New Buffalo, signed my nominating petitions because they believe I am the candidate who can defeat Fred Upton in November. According to the Secretary of State’s website, we are submitting the most signatures of anyone in this race. The results of our petition numbers show voters are looking for someone who can bring a ‘people-first’ and results-driven campaign to Washington, and they can look at my record and see I can get things done without playing D.C. money games or compromising on our shared values”, said Longjohn.

Portage, MI- Dr. Matt Longjohn, a physician and the former National Health Officer for the YMCA, announced that Buchanan Commissioner Dale Toerne has endorsed his campaign for Congress.

“I am excited to be endorsing Matt Longjohn’s campaign for Congress. I have seen all the candidates who are running up close, and Matt is the one candidate in the field who can beat Fred Upton in November. Matt’s public health approach when it comes to making decisions and shaping policy is what the 6th district and Washington need to end the partisan bickering that we are seeing today. With Congressman Fred Upton being the incumbent in November we need a candidate who can draw a contrast with Congressman Upton on the issues, Matt is the candidate who can hold Congressman Upton accountable on his health care vote, the Republican tax plan vote, and Upton’s increasingly poor environmental record”, said Toerne.

Southwest Michigan Native Challenges Rep. Fred Upton, Architect of Republican House Bill that Raises Health Care Premiums

Portage, MI – Today, Dr. Matt Longjohn, a public health leader and the former National Health Officer for the YMCA, announced his campaign to represent Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District. He is running to challenge Congressman Fred Upton, who played a pivotal role in passing the House Republican health care bill that raises premiums for Michigan families.

“When I saw Congressman Upton tip the balance in the House to pass the disastrous Republican health care bill, I felt it was my duty to get into this race. As a doctor and someone with knowledge of how to improve our health care system, I know we can do better.” said Longjohn. “I am running to bring much-needed change to Washington and to be a leader who stands up for the hard-working families of Southwestern Michigan.”

Matt has spent his entire career creating and running large community health programs that have improved the lives of millions of children, families and seniors. Most recently, Matt served as the National Health Officer for the YMCA, one of the nation’s oldest and largest charities. He was the first physician leader in the Y’s 170-year history, and ran community health programs to improve health, reduce costs and create jobs. One of these programs reduced new cases of diabetes by up to 71%, and will save Medicare $1.9 billion over 10 years by employing thousands of community health workers to help their neighbors live their healthier lives. He and his team supported local community work in Augusta, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, and 250 other cities across the nation, positively impacting 73 million people.

Under Fred Upton’s health care plan, middle class families and older adults would pay more for less care, millions of patients with pre-existing conditions would lose coverage and long-term care for seniors would be gutted. Just in Congressman Upton’s district alone, 38,600 will lose their health insurance and premiums statewide will increase $569. The bill would also gut funding for Medicaid and shut down rural hospitals, putting jobs on the chopping block and making it more difficult to treat those suffering from opioid addiction.

“Congressman Upton has been in Washington for too long and has become out of touch with Southwest Michigan, caving to lobbyists, special interests and Donald Trump on critical issues like health care,” said Longjohn. “I’ll never be afraid to stand up to President Trump or any Washington politician to do what’s right for Southwest Michigan families.”

Congressman Upton has spent over 30 years in Washington and collected more than $13 million in campaign cash from special interests, including $3 million from the health care industry. Upton has voted to raise his own pay numerous times while casting votes against working families in favor of unfair trade deals like NAFTA.

Longjohn will run a progressive, grassroots campaign to unseat Upton next November.

“I’m running for Congress to improve the health and quality of life for everyone living in Southwest Michigan,” Longjohn said. “In Congress, I’ll fight for affordable health care, clean air and water, strong schools, fair trade deals and good-paying jobs.

Longjohn lives in Portage, near where he was born and raised, with his wife Valerie and two sons, Till and Max. His family’s roots in the district go back to the Civil War and he is a proud graduate of Portage Northern and Kalamazoo College.

Dr. Longjohn makes a statement on Graham/Cassidy health care bill

Portage, MI –  Dr. Matt Longjohn, a public health leader and candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 6th district, today released a statement on the Graham/Cassidy health care bill.

“The Graham-Cassidy version of Trumpcare would hurt too many Southwest Michigan families.  It’s yet another attempt by Washington politicians to sabotage the individual markets, allow insurers to waive coverage for pre-existing conditions, and to water-down the Essential Health Benefits that guarantee coverage for important things like women’s health and preventive services. Like the bill that Congressman Fred Upton advanced earlier this year, this week’s bill would force many to pay more for less care, cut Medicaid funding, and leave expectant mothers without maternity coverage.  Having access to quality, affordable health care should be a human right.  This means everyone should be confident in their ability to receive needed care or preventive services.  People in Southwest Michigan, or anywhere in the U.S., shouldn’t be forced to choose between obtaining essential health care and other vital daily needs.  Unfortunately, if this bill becomes law, more families will often have to choose between seeing a doctor and paying for their rent. The Senate would not even be in a position to push this terrible policy through in such a rush if it weren’t for similar actions by Congressman Fred Upton earlier this year.  He is an accomplice to this act of political malpractice.”, said Longjohn.

As a doctor and former National Health Officer for YMCA, Matt is uniquely qualified to deliver solutions that will improve access to affordable, quality health care. He will be a powerful voice against the plans by Washington politicians and special interests to force middle class families to pay more for less care, cause millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions to lose coverage and gut long-term care for seniors. Matt’s commitment to public service is grounded in his deep ties to Southwest Michigan and growing up in a tight-knit middle-class community. Health Care Leader Dr. Matt Longjohn Raises 100K in first 14 days of Campaign

Portage, MI – Health care leader and Democratic candidate for Congress, Dr. Matt Longjohn, today announced that his campaign has raised $100,000 in just 14 days since launching his campaign for Michigan’s 6th District.

“I am humbled by the tremendous support we have received over the past 14 days. As a newcomer to politics, and I am thrilled that there’s so much support for a campaign that is focused on improving the health and quality of life for everyone in this District. We have received over $100,000 from more than 150 individuals who are looking for someone to stand up against Congressman Fred Upton. People from Southwest Michigan, and many health care and public health professionals from across the country, have helped us get off to a strong start. Locally, people are looking for something new and authentic. Over the next 16 months I’ll be going to every corner of Southwest Michigan to hear from voters across the 6th District, and to blend a grassroots campaign with a national fundraising effort. I am just getting started,” Longjohn said.

Portage, MI –  Dr. Matt Longjohn, a public health leader and candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 6th district, today released a statement on the Upton-Ryan Tax Plan.

“The Upton-Ryan tax plan is another way for the Republican party to reward their corporate donors with more tax breaks while shifting even more of the burden onto middle-class Michigan families. I know in my family, and in my community, eliminating the student loan interest deduction, the state and local income tax deductions, and the medical expense deduction, are all going to hurt peoples’ pocketbooks. When I get a chance to represent this district, my votes will always be based on the best interests of the people of the districts, not of corporate donors or party bosses.”

Dr. Matt Longjohn Raises Record $211K in First Three Months of Campaign

Portage, MI – Today, Dr. Matt Longjohn, a national public health leader and Democratic candidate in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, announced that his campaign has raised $211,690 from 426 donors since announcing in July.  According to FEC reports, this quarterly total is an all-time record for any Democratic candidate’s first fundraising filing in the district.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support we have seen from hardworking people who are looking for a change in direction. Our campaign is about ensuring access to affordable and quality health care, fighting for quality of life issues across the district, and making sure middle-class families in Southwest Michigan have a voice in Congress.  Our message and our efforts are clearly resonating with voters. I will continue to bring innovative ideas forward, and to hold Congressman Upton accountable for playing politics with people’s health care.  His leading role in advancing the Republican health care bill this year would have been devastating to tens of thousands of Southwest Michigan families,” said Longjohn.

Since Longjohn kicked off his campaign in mid-July, he has traveled more than 5,000 miles across the district, which includes Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, and St. Joseph counties.

Dr. Longjohn is a fifth-generation Michigander who has spent his career in working to improve the health and quality of life of Americans across the nation. Matt Longjohn comments on Fred Upton not holding a town hall.

Portage, MI – Today, Dr. Matt Longjohn, a national public health leader and a candidate for Congress, made a statement on Fred Upton’s record of not having a town hall for 8 years.

“This is a frustrating anniversary for many in Southwest Michigan.  Since this day in February of 2010, Congressman Upton has refused to hold any town hall meetings where he couldn’t control the questions.   He apparently feels he no longer needs to be held accountable to his constituents, or that it’s too hard to publicly defend his voting record.  It’s no coincidence that over the past 8 years Congressman Upton’s record in Washington has become defined by putting corporate special interests over those of working families. For example, he led the charge to push the Republican health care plan forward into the Senate last year, which would have kicked 38,600 Southwest Michiganders off their health care plans while raising the premiums for many others. He also recently played a central role in passing the Republican tax scam which added $1.5 trillion to the deficit and gave temporary small tax cuts to families while providing massive and permanent tax cuts to corporations. Unlike Mr. Upton, I won’t turn my back on voters here in Michigan.  I will continue to make myself available in public meetings, office hours, open online forums, town halls, or any other way constituents want me to be held accountable”, said Longjohn.

Matt Longjohn Demonstrates Early Grassroots Support

Portage, MI – Today, Dr. Matt Longjohn, a public health leader and the former National Health Officer for the YMCA, announced 160 Citizen Endorsers for his campaign for Congress.

“I am humbled and inspired by the support my campaign has received from our earliest local citizen endorsers.  These are community leaders, community activists, local influencers, and citizens who want a new representative who will fight to hold President Trump accountable in Washington.  After hearing our campaign’s message, which is focused on improving the health and quality of life for everyone in Southwest Michigan, they’ve agreed to put their names behind my effort to unseat Fred Upton.  Since we launched in July, one thing has become clear: voters in the 6th district are sick of politicians and Washington insiders who play political games with people’s lives, and who say one thing and do another.  Our political and economic system is just not working well enough for them and their families.  I have a proven record of building coalitions and getting things done that make people’s lives better.  When I get to Washington my office will be accountable to the people here in the district, not Corporate PAC donors”, said Longjohn.
