Longjohn receives endorsement from Sierra Club
Portage- Today, Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, Dr. Matt Longjohn, announced that the Sierra Club has endorsed his campaign for Congress.
“Dr. Matt Longjohn has earned the Sierra Club’s endorsement because Congressional District 6 deserves a representative who will make environmental protection a top priority. As a physician and public health expert, Matt understands the intrinsic links between a healthy environment and healthy communities. Unlike Fred Upton, we are confident that Matt will be a fierce defender of clean air, water, and the health of all Michigan citizens. We will work hard to ensure he is elected to Congress” said Mike Berkowitz, Political Director, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter.
“Dr. Matt Longjohn has spent his career advocating and fighting for the health of communities across the country. In comparison, his opponent Fred Upton has spent his time in DC voting against protections for our environment and has worked alongside President Trump to dismantle the patient protections in the Affordable Care Act, driving up health care costs and putting insurance coverage to over 600,000 Michiganders at risk. The people of District 6 will be in good hands with a future leader like Dr. Longjohn, and we will be working hard to make sure he is elected in November,” said Richard Barron, Political Chair, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter:”
Longjohn also commented on the endorsement.
“I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the Sierra Club. You can’t live your healthiest life without safe and clean air, water, or soil, and in the 6th district, our environment is also the basis of our economy. The future of tourism associated with our lakes, beaches, recreational activities, fishing, and hunting, as well as our agricultural economy, depend entirely on our efforts to protect and sustain our environment. We need a Representative in Washington who understands how seriously to take environmental issues. Over the past several years, Congressman Fred Upton has been cashing checks from big oil and gas industries, while repeatedly voting against environmental protections that have hurt Southwest Michigan. For example, he voted to repeal the Clean Water Rule. Families from Parchment to Plainwell, and anywhere else that has been dealing with PFAS contamination, know we need more protections on our water. Though Mr. Upton talks about being a problem solver, he votes along party lines and has earned a 13% voting record on overall environmental issues. Unlike Congressman Upton I will be a staunch defender of the environment” said Longjohn.
